MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. —
State police say a tow truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries as he was helping a motorist on Interstate 495 early Sunday morning.
The 33-year-old Wareham man, Jonathan Tetreault, was stopped along the highway near Exit 4 in Middleborough to assist with a disabled car. He and the disabled car were hit by a Honda Civic at around 12:30 a.m.
"Oh it's awful, it's awful, everybody fears getting hit by a car on the highway because it's dangerous," said Marc Whitney, from Marc's Auto Service, the company Tetreault works for.
Whitney says Tetreault has only worked for with the company for three months, but calls him an experienced tow truck driver.
"It's always a stress for them. You got to be careful and watch out for other people."
Witnesses told police the Honda may have been speeding.
Massachusetts' "move over law" requires drivers approaching an emergency vehicle with flashing light to move to the next lane if it's safe to do so. Whitney says he's constantly reminding his 30 employees to be safe, and keep a cautious eye on approaching drivers.
Tetreault was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in critical, but stable condition.
The 29-year-old driver of the Honda and a 32-year-old passenger were taken to a local hospital with injuries.
