A Thursday afternoon house fire in Port St. Lucie appears to have been started after lightning struck the roof.




The St. Lucie County Fire District said a Thursday afternoon house fire in Port St. Lucie appears to have been started after lightning struck the roof.

The fire occurred in the 600 block of Hamberland Ave. just before 5 p.m.

Pictures tweeted by the fire district showed firefighters attacking flames on the roof of the single-story house.

Crews said the fire quickly spread throughout the home.

The Red Cross was called to assist three adults, a child and a dog.

No injuries were reported.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Lightning may have sparked a Thursday afternoon fire that caused significant damage to a home, but no injuries, a St. Lucie County Fire District spokeswoman said.

Crews were notified at 4:15 p.m. of the fire in the 600 block of Southwest Hamberland Avenue, said Brenda Stokes, Fire District spokeswoman.

She said three adults and one child were displaced.

All were out of the home when firefighters arrived, Stokes said.

A firefighter got a dog off the back porch and took it to safety.

Stokes said the home sustained significant damage, including a collapsed roof. Crews remained on scene as of 6 p.m., she said.Lightning is suspected to have caused the fire, but that hasn’t been confirmed, Stokes said.

Worker dies after Sharon industrial accident


SHARON, Mass. —

A worker injured Thursday in an industrial incident in Sharon has died.

The incident happened just before 9:30 a.m. at Industrial Metal Products, a metal fabrication company at 15 Merchant St. in Sharon.

When first responders arrived, a 26-year-old man was found pinned in a large piece of machinery with life threatening injuries, Sharon police said.

Sharon first responders and Norfolk County Technical Rescue team worked for about an hour to extricate the man.

The worker was taken by ambulance to Norwood Hospital.

Although the worker was initially conscious and talking when rescue crews arrived, he died from his injuries.

His name has not been released.

“Any time we deal with somebody dying, it's difficult and it takes its toll over a firefighter or paramedic's career. Yeah, very difficult. But we'll have our critical incident stress debriefing to make sure everybody's doing OK,” Murphy said.

Industrial Metal Products had no comment on the incident. According to its website, the company cuts and shapes aluminum and steel into cabinets, counter-tops and other products.

It's been in business for 60 years.

Sharon police detectives and State Police are investigating the incident. OSHA has been notified.
