ANTHEM, AZ - The Phoenix Fire Department says a woman rescued after she stopped breathing while hiking up the Desert Vista Trail has died.

Calls came in about a woman who was having heat-related issues about a mile up the trail around 9 a.m. Officials say that bystanders started CPR on the 28-year-old woman, who is an avid hiker and personal trainer, after she stopped breathing while mountain biking.

Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Larry Subveri said the woman and friends started mountain biking at 6 a.m. and they had water on them. However, around 9 a.m. she became exhausted. The woman did not have a pulse and stopped breathing, and that's when both of her friends, who are doctors, started CPR on her.

The woman was located by fire officials, who were able to helicopter her off of the trail. She was taken to HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center, where firefighters say she later died.

2 injured after car and stoplight pole came crashing into Santa Clara home

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- A man was sitting in the living room with his little boy when a car smashed into his house and a stoplight pole came barreling through the window.

Police say a BMW SUV went through a red light just after 10:30 Thursday night. The vehicle then hit another car, sheared off a traffic signal pole and crashed into the home Lafayette Street and Lewis Street in Santa Clara.

"It was like a bomb going off right outside. Because all we knew was our window was flying at us," said Santa Clara resident Patrick Paul.

Patrick Paul was in the living room with his wife, 5-year-old son and friend, Matt Laplaca.

"So when we went back in we saw that the couch had moved away from the wall because where the pole came in was exactly where I was sitting. So we came back in and that was me, where the light pole came into the building," said Laplaca.

Matt and Patrick both went to the hospital with minor injuries to get patched up after they were cut by glass. Matt's wife and son are okay. The man police say was behind the wheel of the BMW, 21-year-old Santa Clara resident Francisco Cortezcruz, was caught by officers walking away from the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and felony hit-and-run.

A passenger in Cortezcruz's car was also arrested on a drunk in public charge.

"I'm just upset with the fact that this could've ended with a fatality tonight. That would have just been horrific," said Patrick.

The Paul family has been renting this home for two and a half years. They say something like this has never happened before, but they were warned when they moved in that cars have crashed into the yard. That's why they don't let their son play out front.

"Hopefully this is our once in a million thing that happens to you," said Patrick.

The Patrick family says they're going to stay with their friend Matt, until everything here can be cleaned up.

2 injured in fire that damaged 6 buildings in San Francisco's Bernal Heights

SAN FRANCISCO -- Fire officials said evacuation orders remain in effect for two locations near a five-alarm fire that heavily damaged six buildings, nine businesses and injured two today in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood.

Evacuations were still in effect as of 7:41 p.m. for the 3300 block of Mission Street and 29th Street between San Jose Avenue and Mission Street, fire spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.

Flames pour out of a building on Mission Street in San Francisco on June 18, 2018. (Flames pour out of a building on Mission Street in San Francisco on June 18, 2018.)

Two people were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and a 1-year-old was treated outside the fire for breathing issues. The child was not taken to a hospital, Baxter said.

Forty people have been displaced. Firefighters have not determined whether any pets died in the fire. However; firefighters located two cats that belonged to nearby residents.

The first report of the blaze came in at about 2:30 p.m. near Mission and 29th streets.

Manager Brian Mitchell of nearby Mitchell's Ice Cream at 688 San Jose Avenue said he heard fire trucks come on scene at about 2:30 p.m.

"There was black smoke billowing from the roof of the apartment building at 29th and Mission," Mitchell said. He saw fire burning the apartments above the 3300 Club bar at 3300 Mission St.

Firefighters contained the fire at 6:27 p.m.

A shelter-in-place order was lifted earlier this evening for a five-block area bounded by San Jose Avenue on the west, Cesar Chavez Street on the north, 30th Street and Eugenia Avenue on the south and Folsom and Elsie streets on the east.

But police said Mission Street between Valencia and 30th streets will be closed at least until the morning.

Officials with the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army have set up a shelter for residents at the Salvation Army Community Center at 1156 Valencia St., Red Cross spokeswoman Kathleen Maclay said.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management has set up security for the shelter, which is typical, spokesman Francis Zamora said.

Baxter said Mayor Ed Lee came to the scene and spoke with affected residents.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation. Baxter said that this fire is not related to the recent fires in the Mission District.

People have a misconception that the fires are being set intentionally, Baxter said. That's not the case, he said.

The pilot, 62-year-old Alexander Piekarski of New York, was flying alone from Long Island, New York, to Taunton, Massachusetts.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Piekarski lost power and attempted to head toward Westerly Airport, but due to a loss in altitude, decided to make an emergency landing into the water so he wouldn't hit people on the beach.

The pilot was able to escape the plane before it sank. Lifeguards were able to help Piekarski back to the beach.

The pilot was taken to RI Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The plane will be inspected once it's removed from the water.

Firefighters and law enforcement personnel rally outside the main building at the Empire Generation plant in the Port of Albany after an industrial fatality Friday June 17, 2016 in Rensselaer , N.Y. (Skip ... more

Rensselaer, New York

A worker for a subcontractor performing routine maintenance was killed Friday when a cooling fan fell on him at the Empire Generating Co. power plant, authorities said.

Rensselaer Police Deputy Chief Jim Frankoski said the victim worked for maintenance rigging subcontractor 3D Rigging and Construction, Inc. Two other maintenance employees were present but unhurt.

Rensselaer police were called at 8:30 a.m. and asked Albany police and fire departments to help in a rescue effort. But authorities soon determined the victim was dead, Frankoski said. A crane lowered his body from the top of the structure at about 10:45 a.m.

Frankoski said he was not sure how far the equipment fell.

"The fan dropped lower than it should have and caught him," Frankoski said. He did not identify the victim but estimated he was in his late 40s or early 50s.

Frankoski said he was not sure if parts of the plant, at 75 Riverside Ave., would be shut down following the fatality.

In a statement, Empire Generating Co. plant manager Sean Spain said the company has alerted the state Department of Public Service about the death. 3D Rigging, according to the statement, has notified OSHA. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials did not immediately return requests for comment Friday.

"The thoughts and prayers of the Empire Generating employees are with the family, friends and coworkers of the deceased worker," Spain said in the statement.

Managers at 3D Rigging were not immediately available for comment, a person who answered the business's phone early Friday afternoon said.

Empire Generating Co. owns a Rensselaer power plant with a seasonal weighted capacity of 645 megawatts, according to its website. It began selling power to the state electrical grid in 2010.

3D Rigging's state registration as a woman-owned business describes it as a Glenmont company that works in rigging, industrial maintenance and custom fabrication.
