1 PERSON IS DEAD AND ANOTHER IS INJURED AFTER THEIR PLANE CRASHED IN THE BIG BELT MOUNTAINS IN MONTANA

MARCH 26, 2015

HELENA, MONTANA

One person (the plane pilot) is dead and another (his wife) is in the hospital after the plane they were flying in crashed in the Big Belt Mountains near Hidden Lake.  They were both from Canada.
According to Meagher County Sheriff John Lopp, 911 dispatchers received a call around 1 p.m. on Thursday from a woman saying the plane she was flying in had crashed.

Lopp says the crash site is located near Hidden Lake, west of White Sulphur Springs in steep and rugged terrain with trees and waist-deep snow.

We're told the woman was located at about 5:45 p.m. on Thursday and then flown to St. Peter's Hospital in Helena for treatment.

Emergency crews also recovered the body of a man in the wreckage.

Personnel from Malmstrom Air Force Base and Meagher County Search and Rescue were directed to the site by Montana State Aeronautics and guided there by the plane's emergency locator transmitter.

The plane took off from Great Falls International Airport just before noon and according to FlightAware.com, was en route to Arizona. We're told both people were both from Canada.

The two were flying in a small, single-engine Saratoga Piper Cub.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating the crash.

FISHERMAN DROWNS IN BITTERROOT RIVER IN MONTANA AFTER HIS BOAT HITS SUBMERGED LOG. HE WAS NOT WEARING A LIFE JACKET

MARCH 26, 2015

HAMILTON, MONTANA

A 74-year-old Darby-area fisherman drowned in the Bitterroot River early Wednesday afternoon.

The man was fishing with two other adult men between Tucker and Victor crossings when the boat they were in hit a submerged log, said Ravalli County Undersheriff Steve Holton.

All three men were thrown into the river.

Two were able to get back into the boat, but the 74-year-old man was washed downstream, Holton said.

Another boat spotted him in the river, but those fishermen weren’t able to get to him. They called 9-1-1 at about 12:35 p.m.

The man was found just north of Victor Crossing completely submerged, Holton said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Members of Ravalli County Search and Rescue, the sheriff’s office, and Victor and Stevensville volunteer fire departments responded to the call along with an ambulance from Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital.

“It’s getting to that time of year when the river is rising and weather is nice enough that people are getting out and floating,” Holton said. “They need to watch for submerged obstacles in the river.”

POLICE SAY TRUCKER IN FIERY NEW BERN, NORTH CAROLINA CRASH IS IN MEDICALLY INDUCED COMA AFTER SUFFERING SEVERE BURNS

MARCH 26, 2015

NEW BERN, NORTH CAROLINA

New Bern police say the driver of a tractor trailer rig that was involved in a fiery crash is in a medically induced coma.

The victim has been identified as Kirby Best, 42 of La Grange.

New Bern police earlier released information that Best had passed away.
Lt. Ronda Allen tells WITN they had some misinformation from CarolinaEast Medical Center and should have verified it for themselves.

Best is at the Chapel Hill burn center in critical condition.

Police say a car, driven by 57-year-old Larry Lawson of New Bern, was trying to pass the truck on Old Highway 70 when it hit the big rig, causing the truck to jackknife.

The truck became engulfed in flames and Best had severe burns.

Lawson and a passenger were treated and released from CarolinaEast Medical Center.

The highway was shut down for part of the morning because of the crash.
Police say charges are pending against the driver of the car.

CHEMICAL SPILL ON HIGHWAY 41 IN ALABAMA: 18-WHEELER LEFT THE ROADWAY AND FLIPPED SEVERAL TIMES, SPILLING ITS LOAD OF ADHESIVE

MARCH 26, 2015

BREWTON, ALABAMA

Update
Cleanup remains under way for a hazardous material spill on Hwy. 41 North, and motors should continue to avoid the area.

Just before 9 a.m. Thursday, a semi-truck, bound for Georgia Pacific, crashed just before the AT&T tower.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said the 18-wheeler left the roadway and flipped several times.

“The truck was carrying the adhesive they put in paint to make it stick, which makes clean up difficult,” Lambert said. “We hope to have the cleanup process finished by the time everyone gets ready to go to work in the morning, but in the meantime, please avoid the area.”

Lambert said travelers should use alternate routes along Lowery Landing Lane, Appleton Road and Tippens Eddy Road.

Lambert said the driver suffered a head laceration and was transferred to D.W. McMillan Hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
