The California Highway Patrol said a driver was heading southbound on the freeway near Woodbridge Road and, for unknown reasons, veered into the northbound lanes, striking another car.
The first vehicle continued across traffic and rolled into an embankment where it caught fire.
The wrong-way driver, who was the only person inside the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Five people in the second vehicle were all taken to the hospital with minor injuries, officers said.
One vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle fire sparked a small grass fire, but crews were able to get it out pretty quickly.
