1 Killed and 5 Injured after Wrong-Way Head-On Crash on Interstate 5 Near Lodi, California

LODI, CALIFORNIA —

One person is dead and five others injured after a head-on crash near Lodi on Monday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near Woodbridge Road. One vehicle reportedly crossed from southbound I-5 into northbound lanes and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

The California Highway Patrol said a driver was heading southbound on the freeway near Woodbridge Road and, for unknown reasons, veered into the northbound lanes, striking another car.

The first vehicle continued across traffic and rolled into an embankment where it caught fire.

The wrong-way driver, who was the only person inside the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Five people in the second vehicle were all taken to the hospital with minor injuries, officers said.

One vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle fire sparked a small grass fire, but crews were able to get it out pretty quickly.

One lane of northbound I-5 was closed for a few hours but has since reopened, according to Caltrans.

The identity of the victims has not yet been released.
