DEADSYLVANIA: A 1998 GMC Jimmy tractor-trailer struck and killed 41-year old road worker Michael J. Friendy of Hazleton who was setting up cones on I-81 in Pennsylvania. He was a foreman for a line-painting crew.



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa — On Friday June, 9, 2017 a motor vehicle crash occurred on Interstate I-81 Pennsylvania State Police confirmed.

PSP confirmed that Chambersburg investigated a struck pedestrian in Greene Township Franklin County

PennDOT said that a contractor was doing line painting when he was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer on Friday night.

tractor-trailer struck and killed 41-year old road worker Michael J. Friendy of Hazleton who was setting up cones on I-81 in Pennsylvania, PA PSP said.

He was actively setting up the Construction Zone when he was struck police said.


PennDot officials said that a foreman was setting cones when he was hit and killed.

PSP confirmed the man was a 41-year-old man from Hazelton, PA who was struck by the passing motorist.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene PSP confirmed.

Interstate 81 was closed between exits 16 and 20 for an accident, but is now clear.


State Police said the incident occurred around 9:14 p.m. at mile marker 19.5 in Franklin County. State Police said the causation of the crash is still under investigation.

Michael J. Friendy, 41, of Hazleton, passed away Friday night in Chambersburg.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of Rosemary Carr Friendy and the late Eugene Friendy.

He was a foreman for a line-painting crew. He was a dog lover, enjoyed relaxing at his fire pit and always could be found building his next home improvement project. Michael was also an avid Philadelphia sports fan.

Preceding Michael in death, in addition to his father, were his maternal grandparents, John and Evelyn Carr; and paternal grandparents, George and Beatrice Hamilton.

Surviving, in addition to Michael’s mother, are the love of his life, Heather Oster; sister, Gina Friendy and her husband, Warren Fisher, Hazleton; niece, Alyssa Fisher; close family friend, Tom McAndrew; and dog, Samantha.

His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday from Joseph A. Moran Funeral Home, 229 W. 12th St., Hazleton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Queen of Heaven Parish at Our Lady of Grace Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.
