UPPER STRASBURG, Pa. — A fire ripped through an auto-repair business Tuesday and killed a family dog, according to Pleasant Hall Fire Chief Dale Myers.
Myers said firefighters saw a two-bay garage engulfed in flames when they arrived shortly after 11 a.m. to 10640 Upper Strasburg Road.
Crews initially tried to extinguish the fire from outside the 25-foot-by-75-foot structure, in part, because there were propane tanks and other flammables inside, Myers said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, he said.

The Upper Strasburg Garage and three vehicles inside the business were destroyed.

"The property owner was checked out by the ambulance due to singes and burns around his face. He (was) released and is fine," Myers said.

A yellow Labrador retriever died in the fire, he said.

FAMILY ESCAPES FIRE IN 2-STORY COMMERCIAL BUILDING IN  DOWNTOWN WASILLA IN ALASKA.  THE FIRE STARTED IN THE SECOND FLOOR APARTMENT.

By Hope Miller 8:20 AM January 20, 2015 ANCHORAGE –

A family was able to escape a large fire in a two-story commercial building in downtown Wasilla Tuesday morning, authorities say.

Crews from around the Mat-Su Borough responded to the fire on Wasilla-Fishhook Road near Nelson Avenue shortly before 5 a.m. The building contains Crescent Electric Supply Company, another shop and a nonprofit. There is also an apartment on the second floor, which is where the fire started, said James Steele, Wasilla Lakes fire chief.

Two adults and two children were inside the building when the fire started, but were able to escape unharmed, said Dennis Brodigan, director of the Mat-Su Borough Department of Emergency Services. The American Red Cross of Alaska says they are assisting a family of five that was displaced by the fire.

When crews initially arrived, the 100-by-200-foot metal building was about 25 percent involved and the roof had already caved in. Around noon, the Mat-Su Borough said the fire was under control, but that crews would remain on scene for about four to five hours.

Matanuska Electric Association had to shut down part of a line so crews could work the fire, the co-operative said in a Facebook post, resulting in a loss of power for roughly 200 customers. Area roads were also closed off, Brodigan said.

Because road access to the nearby Iditarod Elementary School was cut off, the Mat-Su Borough School District said school would be optional for the day with no attendance consequences. After-school activities were also cancelled.

In a Facebook post, the district wrote that some students were taken to Wasilla Middle School until the elementary school became safe and accessible again.

The building was home to Hope for Heroes, a nonprofit that “provides assistance and support to Military Families and our Troops during deployments, and throughout the year” along with the New Frontier Wrestling Alliance.

State police identified a state trooper and an armored truck driver injured in a crash on eastbound I-70 near the Washington County line Monday afternoon.

Master Trooper Lester Leggett was walking back to his patrol cruiser along the right shoulder of eastbound I-70 just west of Md. 17 after wrapping up a traffic stop on a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe around 2 p.m., according to a state police press. Leggett's cruiser was parked directly behind the Hyundai, the release states.

As Leggett was still outside his cruiser, a Brinks security truck headed east swerved, lost control and struck the guardrail, Leggett's cruiser and the Hyundai, according to the release.

Leggett was knocked to the ground and taken to the Frederick Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, while the truck driver, James Kenneth Williams III, of the 1200 block of Damsel Road in Essex, Maryland, was flown to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment, the release states.

The driver of the Hyundai, Kelly Hepburn, of the 1100 block North Franklin Street in Wilmington, Delaware, was not injured, police said.

The release did not cite any further details regarding any charges or what caused the truck to lose control, but an officer at the scene, Trooper First Class Granville Fairbanks, said the truck swerved to avoid striking a vehicle in front of it that had slammed on its brakes.

ELDERLY WOMAN CRITICALLY INJURED, HER DOG KILLED IN ALBUQUERQUE HIT BY A TRUCK WHILE SHE WAS IN THE CROSSWALK.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An elderly Albuquerque woman walking her dog was critically injured when a truck hit her Tuesday morning. Her dog was killed. Police say she was in a crosswalk and that has people living nearby concerned.

Roads blocked with crime tape, covering another pedestrian crash have become an all too common of a site in Albuquerque.

“It’s a terrible shame,” Reed said.
Albuquerque police say an elderly woman and her dog were hit by a truck as it turned onto Anaheim from Wyoming around 9:00 Tuesday morning.

“It was blocked off at Corona and so I had turned to come down this way,” said Reed.
Police say the victim and her pet were in the crosswalk crossing a side street when it happened. Police don’t know where the woman was walking to or from but the North Domingo Baca dog park is just a block away from the crash scene.

“I thought well that’s got to be somebody walking the dog to come over to the park either inside or around that area,” Reed told KRQE News 13.

Police say the woman is in critical condition. Her dog was taken to the North View Animal Hospital just feet away from where she was hit but police say veterinarians weren’t able to save the dog’s life.

Dog owners say drivers need to watch out on Wyoming, but they also say walkers need to watch out, too.

Police say the driver did stay on scene and answered questions about what happened.
They’re still figuring out if the driver will be charged. Police say they don’t think drugs and alcohol are a factor.
