State police at Uniontown said speed was a factor in an all-terrain vehicle crash Saturday near a campground in Fayette County that killed a 50-year-old Dunbar Township man.
Robert S. Basinger was the lone occupant on his ATV that was traveling along Adelaide Road near the River's Edge Campground Park in Dunbar Township about 7:50 p.m. when the crash occurred, police said.
Basinger accelerated his ATV as he entered the roadway at a high rate of speed, police said. The vehicle shifted onto two of its four wheels and overturned onto the highway.
Police said Basinger was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said he was not wearing a seat belt or a helmet.
The road was closed for three hours after the crash, according to state police.
A spokesperson for the campground said that Basinger was not camping but resided in nearby Adelaide in the township.
This poor fellow was not wearing a seat belt or a helmet and he was speeding. In conclusion, by defying prudent and safe-oriented behavior, he had a death wish and he reached his final destination.
