Fire crews battle weekend house fire in Iowa City, IA

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
More than a dozen firefighters battled a house fire in Iowa City over the weekend.
Iowa City Fire crews tell us when they arrived to a home in the 600 block of South Lucas Street just before 8 clock Sunday night, they saw smoke coming from the roof of the home.
Fire crews say the fire was on the second floor in the back of the home.
Residents of the home told firefighters that one of the second floor tenants was unaccounted for.
So after crews conducted a search of all floors without finding the other resident, Iowa City Police told firefighters the resident was not home at the time, and was accounted for.
Due to rapidly changing fire and smoke conditions, crews were forced to to exit the structure and extinguish the fire from outside the building. The fire was brought under control in less than two hours.
Seventeen firefighters and a battalion chief initially responded to the fire, along with additional off-duty personnel to provide additional firefighting assistance and staff other City fire stations.
Outside agency support and assistance were provided by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Mid-American Energy and Noel's Tree and Crane Service. Hills, Coralville, Solon and West Branch Fire Departments assisted with backfilling other Iowa City fire stations.
The building sustained significant damage, although there is no loss estimate at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal.
