An 8-year-old boy died this morning in an ATV accident on a private track behind his Penn Hills home, police said.

Cody Trim was found underneath an overturned quad behind his house on Saltsburg Road around 10 a.m., according to the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office.

Penn Hills police Chief Burton said the boy was riding the ATV on a small track behind his home when he crashed.

The boy’s grandmother was home at the time and went out to check on the boy when she stopped hearing sound coming from the ATV, Chief Burton said. The grandmother called authorities when she found the boy under the ATV.

Police and medics responded to the home and began performing CPR before the boy was taken to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC where he died a short time later.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

Chief Burton said investigators are still trying to determine what caused the ATV to roll over, but it does not appear to be suspicious.

“It’s an accident,” he said. “An unfortunate accident.”

Emergency responders transported him to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the chief said. He died at 10:42 a.m., the Medical Examiner's Office said.

The office has scheduled an autopsy Wednesday to determine the cause and manner of death.

Burton described Tuesday's wreck as the community's second “freak accident” involving an ATV in less than a week.

A Monroeville man was killed Saturday in Penn Hills while riding an ATV near a dump site.

Chester Gaunt, 48, and his son, 14, were riding dirt bikes in the Gascola slag dump area next to Thompson Run Road. Gaunt swerved to avoid colliding with a dirt bike from the opposite direction, police said, and both riders lost control of their motorbikes and crashed.
