LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Three boys playing in a garage are being blamed for starting a three-alarm fire that spread to two houses Monday afternoon, displacing six residents. A firefighter went to the hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion.
Fire investigator Mike Wright says the boys, ages 7, 8 and 11, were playing near 44th and Calvert around 5 p.m. when one knocked over a gas can, spilling gas onto the floor. One of the boys then struck a piece of flint, igniting the flames.
No one was inside either home at the time. A dog was rescued from one residence.
Damage to the garage and the two houses was estimated at about $250,000.
