A fatal three-car wreck that killed two people near Westmoreland on Friday morning was caused when a black Hyundai crossed into the opposite lane of traffic, police said.
The woman behind the wheel of Hyundai was driving northbound on Highway 31E just north of Phillips Hollow Road at about 4 a,m. when the wreck occurred. A white Ford pickup truck driven southbound by unidentified male slowed down and swerved to avoid striking the Hyundai when it crossed into his path.The truck was rear-ended by a woman driving a red Nissan Altima southbound. That hit knocked the truck into the ditch, Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford said.
The Hyundai then hit the Nissan almost head-on toward the driver’s side. That collision also sent the Hyundai into the ditch.
The driver of the Altima died at the scene, according to Weatherford. The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by Life Flight helicopter, where she died of her injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck was taken by ambulance to Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin. He is in stable, noncritical condition as of 10 a.m. Friday, Weatherford said.
Authorities have not released the names of the drivers because they are working to notify next of kin, according to Weatherford.
The crash investigation is ongoing.

(Photo: WKRN) WESTMORELAND, Tenn. (WKRN) –Two women were killed and one injured in a crash involving two cars and a truck in Westmoreland early Friday morning.
It happened on Highway 31 East near Phillips Hollow Road around 4:30 a.m.
Police at the scene said a white pickup truck and a red Nissan Altima were traveling southbound on Highway 31 when the Nissan rear-ended the truck.
The impact reportedly caused the Nissan to veer into the northbound lanes and crash head-on into a black Hyundai.
The driver of the Nissan, 39-year-old Holly Briley of Lafayette, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman driving the black Hyundai, 80-year-old Lola Maxey was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center via LifeFlight where she died.
The male driver of the white pickup truck was transported to Sumner Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.
Traffic was diverted near the intersection of Old Highway 31.
Lola Maxey had been reported missing from Louisville Thursday.
