MONROE, NEW JERSEY

State Police have identified the man killed in a crash early Tuesday morning on the N.J. Turnpike in Monroe Township as a man from Pennsylvania.

Richard Hill, 73, was identified as the driver of the red sedan that became disabled in the center lane of the northbound outer roadways shortly after midnight and was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer driven by David England, 49, of Maryland.

The accident was at milepost 73.4 in Middlesex County.

Hill was pronounced dead at the scene. England had to be extricated and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with serious injuries, a spokeswoman for the State Police said.

Trooper Alina Spies said Tuesday that after Hill's car was struck by the truck, the two vehicles left the roadway on the right side, striking the metal guardrail and the concrete wall. Then the truck overturned and came to rest on its left side.

Spies said the highway was closed for several hours after the accident. No charges were filed in connection with the crash.
