A driver crashed a car into a gas meter,
sparking a fire at a South Side strip mall Thursday.
Fire crews were called to the intersection of Pleasanton Road and East Mayfield, around 1:30 p.m.
Officials said the car drove into a gas meter on the side of the building, breaking the meter off below ground.
Witnesses said there was an explosion and the car caught fire. The fire then spread to four other vehicles parked near the building.
Crews were able was shut off gas to the strip mall. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
It is still unclear what caused the driver to crash into the gas meter.
