BELLMAWR, N.J. (WPVI) --
A tractor trailer and several other vehicles were
involved in an accident in the northbound lanes of Route 42 Wednesday morning.
The accident happened around 10:45 a.m. at Route 295, under the Browning Road overpass, in Bellmawr, New Jersey.
Authorities say the truck hit the overpass, knocking the two massive gas tank it was carrying off the trailer and onto the roadway.
Josh Archer was in the southbound lanes when one tank approached. He says, "I'm telling my wife, 'hurry up, step on the gas,' because I was scared the barrel was going to hop over the median and come at us."
New Jersey State Police say the mishap ended in a multi-vehicle crash that sent four people to the hospital.
State police say the victims suffered only minor injuries.
All of the northbound lanes of Route 42 didn't reopen for nearly four hours.
Traffic was backed up for miles.
Dylan Skirko of Anchorage, Alaska tells us, "We've been in traffic for maybe an hour and moved five miles, I want to say."
And that's not good when you're trying to catch a flight to Alaska.
Skirko and his fiancee were visiting Ocean City, and it looks like their trip is extended.
He says, "We are all pretty mad we missed our flight, especially because the flights to Anchorage are pretty limited and we probably won't be able to get another one for at least a few days."
It doesn't appear that those gas tanks were filled.
State police haven't released the company name of the tractor trailer that caused the crash.
