TOWAMENCIN, Pa. (WPVI) -- A crash involving four tractor-trailers and several cars has shut down the northbound lanes of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-476) in Towamencin, Montgomery County.

The crash happened before 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in an ongoing construction zone just north of the Lansdale exit.

Initial reports and video from Chopper 6 HD indicated one of the trucks may have caught fire.

There were no immediate reports of serious injuries.

Police have shut down all northbound lanes at the Lansdale exit, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission initiated its "Plan X" protocol.

According to the commission's website, "'Plan X' is the method by which the Commission, in emergency situations such as multiple vehicle accidents, closes certain sections of the Turnpike and reroutes traffic around the affected sections."

There was no word when the road might reopen.

All southbound lanes in the area remained open, but traffic was reported to be heavy and slow approaching the scene.

Motorists heading north were advised to seek alternate routes, including Route 309.
