CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -
UPDATE:A construction worker has fallen at a construction site on Chestnut Street in downtown Chattanooga.
It happened just after 11 a.m. Thursday near Finley Stadium at the corner of West 20th Street and Chestnut Street.
Bruce Garner, spokesman for the Chattanooga Fire Department, says the 56-year-old man was seriously injured and taken to Erlanger for further treatment.
Garner says the worker was operating a jackhammer on the roof of a building when the floor beneath him collapsed and he fell about 25 feet to the ground floor.
Employees with the Wise Construction Company told firefighters that they were demolishing the interior of the brick structure, which is being converted into an apartment building.
Chattanooga firefighters arrived moments later and removed the victim from the debris. They then gave the man initial treatment for his injuries and then handed him off to Hamilton County EMS, which rushed him to Erlanger Medical Center.
The Office of Economic and Community Development issued a stop work notice until structural engineers deem the site safe again.
Wise Properties owns the facility, they are in the process of constructing residential homes.
Channel 3 has confirmed, Wise Properties has received 25 OHSA violations in the last five years.
City officials say the company plans to build a courtyard in the middle of the building, which is why they company needed to demolish parts of the roof.
