THE OVERTURN OR ROLLOVER RISKS OF TANKER TRACKS: Another 2,000-gallon tanker truck overturns in Melrose, Massachusetts, spilling oil to the ground.

A 2,000-gallon tanker overturned in Melrose early Monday morning on an icy road, causing an oil spill, authorities said. The truck crashed around 5:30 a.m. near 34 Howard St., spilling 1,500 gallons of heating oil, according to Captain Kevin Nobile, a spokesman for the Melrose Fire Department.

Howard Street was closed until about 4 p.m. as the state Department of Environmental Protection and private cleanup crews worked to recover the spilled oil.

Eight hundred gallons of oil were unaccounted for, and some may have leaked into a stream flowing towards Saugus, Nobile said. Authorities were unsure how much environmental damage the spill caused.

The truck driver was transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital with injuries not considered life threatening, Nobile said.
