MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ)
An investigation is underway into the cause of a fatal four-wheeler accident in Meador.
The Mingo County Sheriff's Department tells WSAZ that between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Monday, William Ray Hatfield, 26, wrecked his Kawasaki Racer four-wheeler.
Cpl. A. Mines said Hatfield was headed north on Route 6 near Meador and Matewan in Mingo County. Mines said the vehicle went off the roadway on the east side of the road and into a creek. Hatfield was thrown from the four-wheeler and landed in the water.
The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
A passerby spotted Hatfield and his four-wheeler in the water just before 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Mines said Hatfield was not wearing a helmet.
The Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Matewan Fire Department and the Mingo County Medical Examiner.
ATV riding is very dangerous. Please wear helmets, seat belts, etc. when you ride them. Most people are killed by blunt force trauma to the head. So, a helmet may save your life.
