Fuel tank explosion in Gering, Nebraska

 JULY 6, 2015

GERING, Neb. -

A fuel tank explosion in Gering kept area firefighters busy this morning.

Gering Fire Chief Jay Templar says his crew was called out around 7:24 a.m. to 7th Street and County Club Road for a fuel tank on fire.

Before they arrived they received a call of a second fuel tank setting fire, but there were no flames present when they got there.

Templar says there was a little bit of smoke, so they shut everything off and have barricaded the services.

“We don’t know what happened, they were fueling a truck with diesel fuel when they said there was an explosion, flames came up out of the pumps themselves and everybody evacuated the area," says Templar.

Templar says they are waiting for the State Fire Marshall to come and investigate before they can operate the services again.

He says the explosion could be a vapor-related but he’s not sure.

There wasn't any fuel on the ground, but it could have spilled in the trench or in the vault.
