WORKER KILLED AFTER FALLING ALMOST 60 FEET FROM PLATFORM BARGE AT MODERN AMERICAN RECYCLE SERVICES, INC. IN GIBSON, LOUISIANA

A welder was killed this morning in Gibson after he fell 55-60 feet from a platform barge at a company in Gibson, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office said.

James Patrick Lafleur, 44, of Morgan City, was pronounced dead at Teche Hospital in Morgan City, Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said.

Deputies responded to the incident at 9:08 a.m. at Modern American Recycle Services, Inc., 499 Powhattan Court, Gibson, LA 70356, Larpenter said.

Located at 499 Powhatten Court, Gibson, LA 70356 on Bayou Black about 20 miles from the Eugene Island Sea Buoy near mile marker 85 on the ICW. The water depth ranges 16 to 20 foot in the channel with no height restrictions from the Gulf. The yard sits on 74 acres and has 1,700 feet of waterfront with 950 feet of bulk head. An additional 1,800 feet is available for fleeting if needed. 

After 40 years in the barge and ship demolition business, Mr. Butch Caton has yet expanded his business again to accommodate offshore decommissioning. In Spring 2010 M.A.R.S., Inc. opened the yard in Gibson, LA with the main focus being offshore Platform and Rig scrapping. M.A.R.S., Inc. will also continue to do ship breaking and barge demolition at this facility as well. 

At this location M.A.R.S., Inc. has a new 18,000 Manitowoc crane with lifting capacity of 660 Metric Tons.

Other equipment used to assist with downsizing of the platforms include a 2250 Manitowac 250 Ton truck crane, (5) material handlers utilzing magnets, (4) material handlers utilizing grapples/claws, (2) front-end loaders and a genesis 1000 shear.

Our barge turnaround averages 3 to 4 business days, depending on the size of the material, how it is set up on the barge and weather.
