1 DEAD FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING BECAUSE HE WAS USING A GAS-POWERED WASHER INDOORS IN BOURNE, MASSACHUSETTS

MAY 27, 2015

BOURNE, MASS. (WHDH)

A man was killed Wednesday night after a building he was working in filled with carbon monoxide.

Bourne police and fire responded to the Cape Cod business just after 8 p.m.
Wednesday and found the 62-year-old owner of the business passed out inside.
Officers tried CPR and the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.
The incident occurred on Bluff Road in Bourne.

The man inside the building was identified as 62-year-old Donald Shulman. He was reportedly using a gas-powered tool inside.

First responders left the windows open at the business where carbon monoxide readings reached deadly levels.

Employees showed up to Realty Development Associated Thursday to learn the owner of the company had died.

"Coming in, a contractor called and told me, he says he's sorry about the loss, and I just got here as fast as I could," said sales representative Bill D'Antonio.
The man was found unresponsive in a small office next to a gas-powered pressure washer that was running.

"I can't tell you what a shock. I saw Don yesterday afternoon and that was it," said D'Antonio.

The business is a model modular home and office.

The District Attorney's office said it appeared the owner had been working on the power washer when he was overcome by fumes. Heavy smoke then filled the office and alarms went off.

"I know that he was working cleaning the camper because he was getting ready to sell it, and that's really all that I know," said D'Antonio.

The officer that tried to help the man was also taken to a hospital, but he has been released and is okay.

Employees are now trying to cope with the lose.

Police said levels in the building were safe and employees could go back inside.

The DA said the death appeared to be accidental, but they were still investigating.
