LONGMONT, COLORADO

A 21-year-old cadet was killed and a Colorado State Patrol trooper injured when they were struck by a car Saturday morning.

The CSP trooper had the cadet riding along as part of training. They were hit on Colorado Highway 66 near Weld County 1.

They were identified as 37-year-old Colorado State Patrol Trooper Clinton Rushing and cadet Taylor Thyfault.

The incident happened as troopers were attempting to stop a 2002 Honda Civic driven by a 27-year-old man.

CSP says the car failed to yield and drove into the scene of an ongoing crash investigation, which happened earlier in the day.

During attempts to use stop sticks, the suspect struck both the trooper and cadet as they stood outside.

The suspect is currently in custody. Rushing was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Thyfault died on the scene.
