MULTIPLE CRASHES AND SLIDE-OFFS TUESDAY AFTER FREEZING RAIN FALLS ACROSS INDIANA

March 3, 2015

Multiple crashes and slide-offs around central Indiana kept emergency crews busy Tuesday morning as freezing rain fell across the state.

On I-465 and I-65 on the northwest side, a salt truck was involved in a crash that backed up traffic there. The left lane of northbound I-65 was closed near I-865 after a crash there, and drivers should expect delays near mile marker 127.

Three semi trucks were involved in a crash on I-65 in Lafayette. Witnesses reported debris on the roads after that crash, which caused major backups in the area. A semi also slid off the road near mile marker 172.

Troopers Busy this Morning in Vermillion County

Vermillion County—Freezing rain, slick roads, and morning commuters kept troopers from the Putnamville Post busy this morning in northern Vermillion County.

From 6a.m. until 9:30a.m., troopers compiled the following along SR 63 from CR 600 North to Interstate 74 (about an eight mile stretch).

Property damage crashes 1
Personal injury crashes 0
Slide offs 4

Additionally, at 9:25 this morning, Indiana State Police Trooper Tim Rader stopped a black 2010 Jeep for erratic driving on State Road 63 southbound near State Road 32. The Jeep was weaving and utilizing both the driving and passing lanes, and at times, the emergency shoulder.

The driver smelled of alcohol and displayed classic signs of intoxication. A chemical test at the Vermillion County Jail revealed the driver, 58-year-old Timothy Silhavy of Sheridan, IN., tested .22 % BAC. He was incarcerated in the Vermillion County Jail for Operating Vehicle While Intoxicated.

The attached picture is a jackknifed semi southbound SR 63 near CR 600 North, Vermillion County, and in front of North Vermillion Elementary School. The crash was investigated by ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Trooper Brent Hoover and assisted by ISP Master Trooper Gary Winters.

Vermillion County Sheriff’s deputies responded to (3) slide-offs and (1) jackknifed semi during the same time period, but different locations.

Along Interstate 70 during the same time period, troopers responded to:

Property damage crashes 0
Personal Injury crashes 1 (Putnam County 37mm EB, minor injury)
Slide offs 1
