GATES, N.Y. -- Shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday a tractor trailer that was south-bound on Hareck Road flipped over on its side. It happened on an overpass over Route 531 in Gates. The 18-wheeler was exiting Route 531 onto Hareck Road and appeared to have missed the curve and overturned.

Gates firefighters said the tractor trailer came to rest on its side on the overpass. The guardrail kept the truck from going over the edge of the exit ramp. The crash tore the top of the trailer off, spilling some of the cargo, which was all paper products. The female driver suffered minor injuries. The big issue for fire crews was dealing with the fuel spill.

"Right now, it's not bad because with the temperatures being low, with diesel fuel it's a type one combustible liquid, so you need to have some high temperatures to ignite and get it started. We're pretty comfortable right now, if we did have any concerns, we'd be putting down a foam blanket to make sure we had no ignition fire source there," said Gates Fire Chief Jim Harrington.

Harrington said fire crews and emergency personnel will be on the crews for about three hours as they try to get the truck upright and deal with the fuel spill. Hareck Road leads from Route 531 to Rochester Tech Park.
