CHICAGO -- Charges are pending against a woman after an alcohol-related crash killed a man Tuesday night in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.
About 11:45 p.m., the 39-year-old woman was driving south on South California Avenue when she disobeyed a stop sign and struck a vehicle traveling east on West 44th Street, according to Chicago police.
The eastbound vehicle then struck two poles and debris from that crash broke a storefront window, police said. The 28-year-old man driving that vehicle was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.
After the initial crash, the woman's vehicle continued southbound on California and struck a parked car, knocking it onto the sidewalk and into two buildings, police said. Her vehicle then struck another parked car, which was pushed into a third parked car. The woman's vehicle then finally came to a rest.
She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said. Charges were pending against her Wednesday morning.
The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
