EMERYVILLE, Calif. (KGO) -- Firefighters have contained a massive 6-alarm fire in Emeryville. It started in an apartment building under construction and spread to townhomes next door.
The blaze started at 2:45 a.m. There was no one living in the building but dozens have been evacuated from the area and the surface streets nearby have been closed.
Alameda County firefighters say the building is a total loss.

At one point, the blaze could be seen as far away as the Bay Bridge.
"I'm scared for the firefighters. It's a very hard job and to pull up and see how much water that they were having to do, I've never seen it to this level. It was pretty shocking. I hope the people got out safe," witness Anika Dunn said.
The building is located at 3900 San Pablo Avenue. It's in Emeryville right at the Oakland border.
People were evacuated on Apgar Street and units on Adeline Street.
No injuries have been reported at this point.
The westbound I-580 on-ramp at W. MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland has been closed due to the fire.
The eastbound I-80 off-ramp to Ashby Ave. in Berkeley has reopened.
