BARNEGAT LIGHT — One person died and another injured Sunday afternoon after two boats collided in the bay off the coast of Long Beach Island, police said.

New Jersey State Police Lt. Brian Polite said the State Police Marine Unit responded to the collision in the Oyster Creek Channel around 2:45 p.m.

The collision occurred between two vessels — a 36-foot speed boat and a 16-foot Carolina Skiff boat, Polite said.

A total of seven passengers were on board the two boats involved in the crash.

The operator of the skiff boat, 26-year-old Chan-Hee Kang of Hainesport, died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, Polite said.

Another passenger on the skiff boat was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, where he was treated and released. Another passenger did not receive any injuries.

The four passengers on the speed boat were not injured, according to Polite.

A rescue crew from the U.S. Coast Guard's Barnegat Light station assisted with the crash.

Jay Zimmerman, captain of the first aid squad in Barnegat Light, said the following local agencies also assisted: Barnegat Light First Aid Squad, Surf City First Aid Squad, Barnegat Light Fire Company's Water Rescue Squad, Long Beach Township Police Department and the Harvey Cedars Police Department.
