Fort McCoy, WI

An Onalaska man was killed Sunday when he crashed his all-terrain vehicle near Fort McCoy.

According to fort officials, Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies found Richard L. Iverson, 59, unresponsive about 20 feet from his ATV about 1 a.m. at an entrance to a training area near Haven Avenue and Hilltop Road in the town of Angelo.

It appeared he was thrown when his vehicle struck a cable blocking the entrance to a closed training area, police said.

Iverson was pronounced dead by the Monroe County medical examiner. He had no affiliation with the military, and the base is not open for public ATV use.

The incident is under investigation by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command, which said there was no indication of foul play but agents have not “completely ruled it out.
