CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA
A firefighter was recovering Wednesday after being hurt while battling a blaze that destroyed an upstairs unit at a Carlsbad apartment complex, Carlsbad Fire said.
The fire started just before 2 a.m. in a unit on the second floor of the apartments at 935 Laguna Drive.
Five people were inside the apartment at the time of the fire and managed to get out safely. Firefighters contained the flames to just one unit, but the unit was destroyed.
A second unit at the complex was severely damaged by water used in the fire-fighting effort.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for minor injuries sustained while fighting the flames, but was treated and released, according to Carlsbad Fire.
Firefighters had to cut power to the apartment complex, and thus all 12 residents were seeking temporary housing while waiting for power to be restored. It was unclear when electricity would be back on.
Investigators were looking into what started the fire.
