2 Hospitalized after Boat Struck Coast Guard Vessel
Two people were hospitalized Friday night after a boat struck a U.S. Coast Guard vessel at the mouth of Middle River, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police.
A 25-foot recreational vessel was headed into Middle River from a trip to Rock Hall across the Chesapeake Bay when it struck a 29-foot Coast Guard patrol vessel about 9:44 p.m., police spokeswoman Candy Thomson said.
One person in the pleasure craft was thrown overboard but was not injured. One other person on that boat and one Coast Guard officer were taken to Franklin Square Hospital. Six units from Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Department responded with assistance from Baltimore County fire and rescue.
Natural Resources Police are investigating the incident and must report it to the National Transportation Safety Board because it involved a federal government vessel, Thomson said. Investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor.
