MASSIVE LANDSLIDE IN DE MOINES, WASHINGTON, LOOKS OMINOUS. AT LEAST 3 HOMES EVACUATED

MARCH 30, 2015

DES MOINES, WASHINGTON

Residents who live near a large landslide that started last Friday in Des Moines say they can see that it's getting bigger.
Andi Tegtmeyer lives across the street from the three homes that are currently evacuated.
"It definitely has grown quite a bit, even the last couple of days," he said. "It's definitely still moving, that's for sure."
Experts say that's unusual. Typically slides like this settle down in a few days. In this case the city says it could be weeks.

That meant a quick move Monday for renters in one of the areas million dollar homes. It also means a short amount of time for other occupants to get what they want to save out of harm's way.

City of Des Moines Building Official Larry Pickard said there's a small window for safely getting your possessions out of some of threatened homes.

"We would like for folks to be able to get their belongings out when possible, and our window is here. We just don't know how long that window will be open," he said.

There are still a lot of unknowns, including what caused the slide and how large it will actually get. Terrence Miller is a nearby resident.

"I was told basically to just get a bag ready just in case anything else happens," Miller said.

People who live close to the slide now must wait, hope and maybe help.

"Just trying to make sure the families that are displaced are ok, that's obviously our biggest priority," said Tegtmeyer.

"It's always a little scary to know that at any point in time a cop car can pull up to my house and say, 'hey you guys have to leave,'" added Miller.

Looking at these images, we would think that several other homes are in grave risk of being washed away.  It looks ominous.
