DEMOLITION CREWS RUPTURE A GAS LINE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS AS THEY WERE RUSHING TO PREPARE THE SITE FOR AN EVENT

FEBRUARY 18, 2015,

AUSTIN, TEXAS (KXAN)

Gas has been shut off to a main that broke in East Austin Wednesday morning. Demolitions crews at a piñata store on East Cesar Chavez reportedly hit the main gas line, spurring Austin fire crews to respond. Texas Gas Service spokeswoman Christy Penders says crews will need to replace part of the line.

Neighbors have been watching the tear-down of what used to be a piñata and party supply store at Cesar Chavez and Navasota streets. They told us the demolition crews were rushing to get the site ready to host an event for South by Southwest, which is less than a month away. The city confirmed that there is an event permit for that site during the festival week.

Texas Gas Service confirms a third-party contractor ruptured the gas line Wednesday morning. They shut off the gas service to that location, until they can fix that part of the line.
