TAGHKANIC — Five people were injured when their SUV slammed into an overturned milk truck in rural Columbia County late Saturday afternoon.

The county Sheriff's Office said Renea Fontanez, 48, of Cambridge Mass., was driving north on County Route 10 just south of Stroheimer Lane when she hit the tanker truck head-on, injuring herself and five passengers. A fifth passenger was not hurt.

All five declined medical transport.

Deputies said the tanker had overturned when Brian Gelinas, 49, of Red Hook was driving south on County Route 10 and lost control on a hill because of slippery road conditions. The tractor trailer slid backward, jack-knifed and blocked the road, deputies said. The several thousand gallons of milk the tanker was carrying began to leak out, though deputies did not say how much spilled out.

Gelinas was not injured.

The accident is still under investigation.
