A Liberty parks worker has died after a city work truck was hit by a train Wednesday morning.

Cameron Leeds, 26, of Gladstone was driving the truck when he attempted to cross a double set of train tracks on a service road south of Old Highway 210, east of Missouri 291, about 9:40 a.m.

“We have lost a young and vibrant member of our Liberty family today,” Liberty City Administrator Curt Wenson said in a written statement. “Cameron has left an indelible mark on the Parks & Rec Department and the City of Liberty as a whole.”   Of course he should have been more careful and see if the lines are clear from all trains.  You always lose that game, eventually.

Leeds and another worker in the truck were traveling north on the gravel road and had waited at the crossing while a westbound train passed.

But after that train cleared, the parks truck drove into the path of an eastbound train on the second track, police said.

Leeds, who had worked for the city for three years, had to be extricated from the truck, which was knocked into the ditch on the north side of the track. The other worker, a 58-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was reported to be in stable condition Wednesday.

The workers were driving on a gravel service road and the crossing has only a stop sign, with no lowering arms or warning lights. It is not a road used by the general public and has a fence and a gate between the railroad crossing and Old Highway 210. The truck was hit by a Norfolk Southern train.

Leeds’ death is being felt throughout the city’s departments, Wenson said in his statement.

“With a city staff our size,” he said, “we get to know and work closely with people in every department.”

Earlier, Liberty Police Capt. Andy Hedrick said the Police Department shared the same grief.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the workers,” Hedrick said. “We (the police and other city departments) work with the parks all the time and they’re considered family.”

Wednesday’s crash occurred during the middle of Operation Lifesaver’s national Rail Safety Week campaign.

Cameron Austin Leeds, 26, of the Kansas City Northland, joined his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 26, 2018. Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Monday, October 1, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 1600 N. Hwy. 291, Liberty, MO. A service celebrating Cameron's life will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, October 2, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Building Fund at Briarcliff Church.

Cameron was born December 15, 1991, in Hollywood, FL and moved with his parents to the Kansas City area in 2006. He graduated from Oak Park High School and received his Bachelor's degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. He worked for the City of Liberty Parks and Recreation for the past three years, where he was an Arborist and proud ISA member.

Cameron was an Eagle Scout and a Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Cameron was an active member of Briarcliff Church where he served as an usher and was a member of Young Adults. He loved to duck hunt, fish, hike, and camp.

Cameron was united in marriage to Alexandra Heavner on October 23, 2016 in Weston, MO. Along with Alex, Cameron leaves his mom and dad, Janet and Craig Leeds; grandparents, Lorne and Macil Leeds and Mizella Pearson; Alex's mother, Lorie Heavner; and Alex's brother and sister, Joshua Heavner and Amanda Heavner; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends who will miss him greatly. He was preceded by his grandfather, Norman Pearson.

One dead in workplace accident in Scotland County

Scotland County, N.C. (WPDE) — 

One person has died following a workplace accident this week on the jobsite of Edwards Mill Products in Laurinburg , according to N.C. Department of Labor Public Information Officer Mary Katherine Revels.

Revels said the person’s employer is Quality Construction of America Inc.

Revels sent the following statement in an email about the matter:

“The preliminary information we have available at this time is: employees were installing a log deck and were putting plates between the metal deck runners. While the decedent was adjusting one, a tack broke and the employee fell about 17-18 feet through the deck runners. The employee later died at the hospital. The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division with the N.C. Department of Labor will be investigating.”?

This is the second deadly workplace accident this year in Scotland County.

Freightliner truck driver burns to death after he fails to yield and rear ends a trailer under tow that was stopped for construction on I-10 eastbound in Santa Rosa County, Florida

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR) — 

A truck driver was killed on Interstate 10 eastbound in Santa Rosa County.

Just after 2a.m. on Friday, state troopers say the truck rear-ended a semi near mile marker 20.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the truck’s cab was engulfed in flames.

The FHP report says traffic was stopped for construction.

State troopers have not said why the driver did not yield.

The driver’s name has not been released pending next of kin notification.

No other injuries were reported.

A driver was killed early Friday after rear-ending a car on Interstate 10 that had stopped due to road construction.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, at around 2 a.m. Friday three cars were traveling east on Interstate 10 at mile marker 20, approaching Avalon Boulevard. Two of the cars, one driven by 38-year-old Amaury Cisneros Morales of Orlando and another driven by 57-year-old Brian Cordes of Slidell, Louisiana, came to a complete stop due to a construction roadblock in the area.

A Freightliner truck traveling behind Morales’ car failed to stop and rear-ended the trailer being towed by Morales’ car, according to the FHP report. The truck then became engulfed in flames.

The driver of the truck died in the crash, and the driver’s identity has not yet been released pending next-of-kin notification.

Construction worker Jose Gomez, 43, employed by Drew Brandt Construction was crushed to death by the boom of a concrete pump truck operated by Kustom Concrete Pumping in Webster County, Iowa

DUNCOMBE, IOWA —



A Latimer man is dead after an accident at a job site east of Fort Dodge Friday evening, according to Josh Van Waes, Webster County sheriff’s deputy.

Jose Gomez, 43, died at the scene.

Workers were reportedly pouring concrete at 2950 200th St. when the boom of a concrete pump truck landed on Gomez, Van Waes reported.

Gomez was pinned under the boom.

Details of the accident remain under investigation. However, the pump truck could be seen from the road with its boom extended and its front wheels well off the ground as if it had partially tipped over.

The accident was reported at 4:52 p.m.

Workers onsite were able to free Gomez and attempted to resuscitate him, according to Van Waes.

First responders and firefighters administered CPR, but were unable to revive him.

Gomez was employed by Drew Brandt Construction, of Des Moines.

His body will be transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Ankeny where an autopsy will be performed.

The accident will be investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Webster County sheriff’s deputies, Duncombe/Otho police, Fort Dodge Fire Department, Duncombe Volunteer Fire Department, Vincent Volunteer Fire Department, and the Webster County medical examiner were on scene.

Friday’s incident was apparently the second fatal construction accident in Webster County this year. On July 19, Shannon G. Torkelson, 41, of Forest City, was killed when he was struck by a steel beam at a construction site at the CJ Bio America plant west of Fort Dodge.

A trench collapsed in Indian Springs on Friday afternoon, trapping and killing two men.

The victims have been identified as Juan Baez-Sanchez and Victoriano Garcia-Perez.

“This was a very tragic accident, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” Teton County Undersheriff Matt Carr said.

The men were workers at a residential construction site at 120 S. Indian Springs Drive.

The Teton County Sheriff’s Office received notification of a trench collapse from dispatch at approximately 3:03 p.m. Friday. Jackson Fire/EMS personnel were first on the scene at approximately 3:13 p.m. and found one person deceased.

In the process of recovering the first deceased man, the additional victim was found deceased.

Baez-Sanchez and Garcia-Perez were believed to be have been working in a 12- to 15-foot-deep trench before it collapsed. The Incident Command team was responsible for recovering their bodies and the safety of responders working in the trench. The last responding units left the scene at approximately 11:16 p.m. after ensuring there were no additional victims.

According to the Teton County GIS, the construction site is owned by Wilson developer Jamie Mackay. No more details about the victims, including their ages or towns of residence, have been released.

JACKSON, Wyo. (KIFI/KIDK) - 

Two men were killed when a trench they were working in collapsed at 120 South Indian Springs Drive in Jackson Friday.

The Teton County, Wyoming, Sheriff's Office identified the victims as Juan Baez-Sanchez and Victoriano Garcia-Perez. The initial cause of death indicated suffocation, although investigation is continuing.

Emergency personnel were called at 3:13 p.m. According to the Sheriff's Office, one victim was found dead in a 12 to 15 foot deep trench. While workers were recovering the first victim, the second man's body was found.

"This was a very tragic accident, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims," said Teton County Undersheriff Matt Carr.

The men were believed to be working in the trench before it collapsed.

A number of agencies responded to the accident including Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, Town of Jackson Public Works, the Jackson Police Department and the Teton County Coroner's Office.

An incident command team continued to work at the site until 11:16 p.m. Friday to ensure there were no other victims.
