FIRE THAT DESTROYED WOONSOCKET, RI HOME CONSIDERED ARSON

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A fire that ravaged a Woonsocket home on Monday is believed to have been the result of arson, Captain Michael Morin confirmed on Friday.

Flames completely destroyed the six-family tenement on Wood Avenue and it took crews 12 hours to fully extinguish.

The state fire marshal’s office is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who can provide information on the suspect who started the fire.

The fire is believed to have been started around 7 am in the rear of the three-story building.

Amid the flames firefighters managed to rescue a cat from one of the apartments. The cat’s owner says they tried to find him before thick smoke forced them to flee the building. The family was relieved to see that their pet was saved. Nilar, an orange cat that was covered in black soot, received oxygen at the scene from a specialized animal oxygen mask.

The Red Cross is working to raise funds and provide temporary shelter for the 13 displaced tenants.

The home was torn down Monday night after it posed safety concerns.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Firefighters extinguished flames at a duplex in Portsmouth early Friday morning.

Emergency dispatchers received reports of the residential fire in the 90 block of Cushing Street, just after 3 a.m. Portsmouth Fire Department Chief Stockton said crews found the fire in a wall and brought it under control in about 20 minutes.

There were no injuries, but a family of seven was displaced from the residence. The American Red Cross is assisting the family of three adults and four children.

Stockton confirmed the fire was ruled accidental in nature.

XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – Firefighters confirm two children were among those injured after flames spark after a possible explosion at a house in Xenia.

It happened just after 5:00 p.m. at home in the 300 block of East Second Street.

Fire investigators say those two children along with two adults were injured. One of the adults refused treatment. The rest were taken to local hospitals and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

James Nared and Will Hoskins were at a nearby drive through, when they heard a loud explosion and noticed a house engulfed in flames.

“Smoke was rolling through the archway and as I was going through the archway, a child was coming through, it was smokey I couldn’t tell if it was a boy or girl, but I just picked them up” said James Nared, Xenia resident.

Xenia fire department Captain Jason Kinley is thankful the men were around when it happened

“That would be heroic if people risked their own safety to enter a burning house and pull people out of it” said Captain Kinley.

“When something like that happens you don’t do it for glory, you don’t do it for fame. You do it because there’s kids involved” said Nared.

As for the cause of the fire and what’s next in the investigation:

“We’ve got the state fire marshal coming out, detectives. Our local detectives and fire investigators” said Captain Kinley.

The fire captain does want to remind people before running into a burning structure to keep your own safety in mind.

REEDSVILLE, WISCONSIN – Two firefighters received first and second degree burns after battling a silo fire in Reedsville, WI Friday morning.

The Brillion Fire Department said they were dispatched at 8:59 a.m. to an interior silo fire on a farm located at 5316 Oakwood Road.

After being on scene for about a half hour, the top of the silo blew off, burning two of the firefighters.

Fire crews had the fire under control around 1:00 p.m. and cleared the scene around 3:00 p.m.

The cost of damages as well as the cause of the fire are unknown.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – The pilot of a small plane over western Kentucky lost sight of the airport and reported the right engine had stopped shortly before the plane crashed and killed everyone aboard except a 7-year-old girl, according to a preliminary report.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s report says air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane around 5:55 p.m., about five minutes after the pilot had asked for assistance because of engine problems. The pilot’s last contact with controllers was that he had lost sight of the airport.

The Piper PA-34 landed upside down with the landing gear retracted. The crash killed pilot Marty Gutzler; his wife, Kimberly; their daughter, Piper; and her cousin, Sierra Wilder. The couple’s daughter, Sailor, survived the crash.
