DETROIT, MICHIGAN

A Wayne County road worker was killed and another worker injured today after being struck by a county vehicle as they were working to patch potholes.

The incident happened just after 10:30 a.m. on Van Born near Beech Daly in Taylor.

Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said the two workers were on foot, behind a county vehicle, using shovels to patch potholes when another county vehicle that was behind them moved forward and struck them.

"They became trapped between both vehicles," Sclabassi said.

The worker who died was a 47-year-old Garden City man. The injured worker is 46 and from Detroit.

“Today, a member of our Wayne County family perished in a tragic work accident, while another was seriously injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families as we grieve with them. This a terrible and sad day for Wayne County,” Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said in an e-mailed statement.

Sclabassi said investigators are interviewing the driver, a 48-year-old Lincoln Park man, who wasn't injured, in an effort to figure out exactly what happened.

"It's just a horrific incident," she said.
