A traffic accident killed a road worker Friday on the eastbound lanes of Highway 302 just east of Notrees.

While law enforcement on the scene declined to provide any details, a man driving a semi truck said he pulled up after the accident and saw a road worker lying on the side of the road.

The driver of the semi truck went to check the worker’s pulse, but could not save the worker who was hit by a vehicle.

Gene Powell, Texas Department of Transportation spokesman, confirmed via email the worker was the employee of a contractor working under a TxDOT contract.

The employee was part of a mobile operation, Powell said in the email.

TxDOT often contracts out projects to other businesses that perform road work.

Less than a year ago, two contractors working on Highway 302 were killed when a truck reportedly hit both men Oct. 21 at the Ector/Winkler county line while the men were working outside of their vehicle.
