SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — More than a dozen San Antonio Fire Department crews are working to extinguish a fire at a recycling plant on the South Side Friday that sent plumes of smoke more than 100 feet into the air.
The fire appears to have sparked from a pile of scrap metal located at CMC Recycling in the 700 block of Probandt around 1:30 p.m.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether any injuries have occurred or what caused the fire, but a worker at the facility said on-scene that the blaze is a "scrap fire" and that no one has been injured.
The San Antonio Fire Department's active fire page indicates there may be hazardous chemicals stored at the location.
A reader who lives near the fire said the smoke changed colors from white to black and described the scene as "apocalyptic."
Police are diverting traffic from Probandt and have set up a large perimeter around the fire.
