CHICAGO (WLS) -- A woman on a Divvy bike has died after she was hit by a truck in Avondale on Chicago's Northwest Side Friday morning. It is believed to be the first bike-sharing death in the United States.
Chicago Fire Dept. officials said the 25-year-old woman was riding east on Belmont when she was hit by a flatbed truck heading north on Sacramento just after 9 a.m.
Police said she was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Witnesses said rescuers performed CPR on her at the scene.
"When I came here, the bike was laid up here. But you see how that car just went by - he came halfway on the sidewalk," said Angela Edwards, who came upon the scene moments after the crash.
The bicyclist was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, where she later died. Her name has not yet been released.
The truck involved in the crash belongs to AB Hardwood Flooring, which is located not far from the crash. Representatives from the company came to the scene after they were notified of the crash.
After the crash, the truck driver remained on the scene and was seen speaking with detectives.
There are no marked bike lanes in the vicinity of the crash.
