2 pilots injured in vintage Navy plane (1951 T-28A Trojan) crash outside Las Cruces airport in New Mexico

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – 

Two people were injured Friday in a plane crash near the frontage road off Interstate 10 in the Las Cruces area.

According to the FAA, a single-engine 1951 T-28 Navy plane crashed around 10:45 a.m. shortly after departing from Las Cruces International Airport.

According to New Mexico State Police, the plane was occupied by a civilian pilot and a passenger.
The pilot was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso and the passenger was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, state police said.

“It appears at this time that the plane was owned by a civilian and was used for personal use,” said Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo, spokesperson for NMSP.

Armijo said it the occupants received serious injuries.

A witness told police the plane looked like it was having trouble and it was flying low.

According to the FAA, the plane’s registered owner is David Tokoph of El Paso, Texas.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, and the identity of the occupants has not been released.

The aircraft sustained substantial damage upon impact with high desert terrain shortly after takeoff from Las Cruces International Airport (KLRU), Las Cruces, New Mexico. The two occupants onboard the airplane received serious injuries.
