WAYNE, NEW JERSEY
Police have released the identity of the driver killed in the Route 80 car crash that has left a second vehicle passenger dead and a third in serious critical condition.
Michael LaVecchia, 37, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., was killed after his car -- for an unknown reason -- slammed into the rear of a dump truck that was parked on the shoulder of Route 80 on Saturday morning, said Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams, a New Jersey State Police spokesman.
Williams did not release the name of LaVecchia's male passengers, both of whom are 13 years old. The spokesman did not know the relationship between the males in the car.
The front seat passenger, who is still in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital, was also from East Stroudsburg, Pa., Williams said. The rear passenger, who died at the hospital as a result of his injuries, was from Centereach, N.Y., he said.
LaVecchia was driving east at 7:54 a.m. in a Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle when the car left the road, hitting the dump truck, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, Williams said.
Williams said the investigation had determined that the 2015 Mack dump truck was on the right shoulder because it had broken down. The truck's driver, he said, witnessed the accident as he was returning to his vehicle after getting tools to make repairs.
The rear passenger was not wearing his seat belt, but the other two passengers were, and the vehicle's air bags deployed, Williams said.
Police found "possible" drug paraphernalia on the driver, which was taken as evidence, the spokesman said. Williams said toxicology tests were pending and that more information was not immediately available.
WAYNE, NEW JERSEY
Two people were killed and a third was in critical condition after their SUV slammed into a dump truck on the side of the road on Route 80 in Wayne Saturday morning, State Police said.
Three males were in a Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle driving east on Route 80 at 7:54 a.m. when their car left the road for an unknown reason and crashed into the rear of the truck, said Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams, a New Jersey State Police spokesman.
Williams said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His body remained in the vehicle late Saturday morning as emergency crews tried to extricate him.
The crash occurred at milepost 53.2, near the exit for Route 46. As a result, traffic was moving sluggishly in the eastbound lanes in that area.
The two passengers were rushed to the hospital where one of them was pronounced dead, Williams said.
The other passenger, he said, was in "very serious" condition Saturday morning.
Information regarding the identities of those killed and injured in the crash has not yet been released.
