BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -
Authorities released the name Friday afternoon of a Cartersville mother who was killed when her family’s pickup truck was struck by a runaway tractor trailer.
Emerson Police Chief Stan Bradley identified the woman as 31-year-old Kyra Karr
Her husband, 36-year-old Reid Karr, was treated and released from Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
The couple’s two children, ages 2 and 4, are being treated at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite where authorities said they were in serious but stable condition.
Chief Bradley said the family was returning home from a family dinner in Dallas, Georgia when the accident happened.
The semi, loaded with cleaning solvents and other toxic materials, slammed into the family’s pickup truck on Highway 41 in Emerson Thursday night after leaving the Zep Industries plant.
Investigators at the scene said no one was driving the big rig at the time of the accident.
According to police, the driver, identified as 52-year-old Ivan Delgado, was apparently performing a safety check in the parking lot and forgot to set the brakes.
Police said the truck rolled about 50 yards at 25 to 35 miles per hour into the highway, ending up on top of the pickup.
It took emergency workers 90 minutes to free the family from the wreckage.
Delgado was arrested on a DUI charge, according to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office. Investigators said the suspect also has a hold for pending charges.
Chief Bradley told FOX 5’s Aungelique Proctor investigators suspect Delgado may have taken prescription drugs but not alcohol.
Delgado will not have a first appearance hearing until charges are complete, perhaps as early as Saturday.
The International Mission Board reports that Karr was a Southern Baptist missionary to Italy, a University of Georgia graduate, and a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Cartersville.
