DELHI, NEW YORK

A Delhi man was seriously hurt after the minivan he was driving hit a 1,000-gallon propane tank behind the American Legion Hall at about 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, Delhi police said.

Leaking propane ignited shortly after the crash causing a large explosion and fire, according to a media release from the Delhi Police Department, and the cause for the crash is under investigation.

Driver Joseph Mueller, 19, was found nearby and was taken to O'Connor Hospital in Delhi for treatment of unspecified serious injuries, police said.

Mueller was stabilized in the O’Connor emergency department, and then transferred by LifeNet helicopter to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
Hospital officials had no further information about Mueller on Thursday night.
Delhi police were assisted at the scene by Delaware County sheriff’s deputies and state police, the release said.

The weekly bingo game was underway at the American Legion Hall, 41 Page Ave., when the explosion happened, officials said. About 60 people were evacuated, they said, and no one was hurt.

Ed McGrath, commander of the local Post 190, said there was some damage to siding on the back of the Legion Hall but no major damage overall. Dubben Brothers Inc. replaced the propane tank Thursday, McGrath said. A luncheon Friday will go ahead as planned, and said, and no events were scheduled for Thursday.

The American Legion Hall pavilion roof was somewhat damaged and two storage sheds and contents were destroyed by fire, officials said.

Jason Thomson, superintendent of Delaware Academy Central School, said the Delaware Academy Central School District owned one of the two sheds.
