Coast Guard rescues 1 & is searching for another mariner off Lanai

Honolulu – The Coast Guard rescued one man and is still searching for another after the 34-foot fishing vessel Munchkin ran aground on the rocks about one half a miles west of Lanai, HI 12:12 a.m. today.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point located and recovered one survivor in the water about 3:20 a.m. today. The survivor was taken to Memorial Hospital on Maui.

The Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium response from Coast Guard Station Maui and the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew continue to search for the second man who is still missing.

Current on-scene weather conditions are 10 mile per hour winds with 3-4 foot seas.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a Mayday over VHF Channel 16 call from the fishing vessel Munchkin at 12:12 a.m. stating they ran aground and had two people aboard the vessel off of Lanai.
