One lane of eastbound I-26 near Clinton is still closed
due to a traffic accident early this morning which left one person dead.
Coroner Nick Nichols said the driver of one of the two tractor-trailer trucks involved died at the scene. The coroner was not able to determine the gender of the driver, later identified as 54-year-old Tony Cummings of Miami, Fla.
The driver of the second truck - Charles Johnson, 53, of Stone Mountain, Ga. - was not injured, authorities said.
The wreck was reported at 2:10 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 26 at mile marker 56 near Hurricane Church Road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol website. Troopers said two tractor-trailers collided, causing one to burst into flames.
Nichols said the tractor-trailer was registered to Vice Trucking, Inc. of Florida.
City of Clinton Director of Public Safety Robin Morse closed the interstate early on in the investigation due to the fact that the contents inside the burning trailer were unknown.
Once they determined the tractor-trailer was hauling a food product, one lane was reopened, Morse said.
A detour was removed at 5:30 a.m.
One lane is now open eastbound.
Motorists are still asked to use caution in the area and expect delays.
