THE AMPHIPOLIS TOMB SURROUNDING WALL - A MARVEL OF GREEK ENGINEERING BUILT 2,300 YEARS AGO
The surrounding Wall
The surrounding wall of the Tomb is 500 meters long and it is almost a perfect circle. The diameter of the Tomb is 158.4 meters and this is the standard of Deinokratis. It was him that constructed the walls of Alexandria, which are 15.840 meters long. This beautiful surrounding wall, which is almost intact, reaches 3 meters high and is covered by cornice. The marbles come from the island of Thassos.
Missing pieces of the Tumulus surrounding wall have been located
More than 500 missing pieces from the surrounding wall have been found near the place where the Lion of Amphipolis sits. More than 100 stones were discovered just a couple of days ago in Lake Kerkini, where the pieces were transferred in 1936 by the company Ulen, who were in-charge of the construction for the Dam at Kerkini.
Details of the Wall
The marble of the Wall was brought from the island of Thassos and is in almost perfect condition.
Inside the corridor
The photo depicts the base of the wall, the blocks of marble and the base of the wall, just behind the wall. It's impressive to look at the top, to realize the actual depth of the excavations.
The cornice of the Wall
The surrounding wall is covered by an amazing cornice which looks almost intact, even if it was constructed 2.300 years ago.
Multiple levels of marble blocks
As we can see in the photo, the perimeter consists of multiple levels of stone. Total height of the perimeter wall is 3 meters.
Excavations of the perimeter
The tomb of Amphipolis is surrounded by a 500-meter marble wall. This picture was taken during the early excavations

The perimeter wall - close look
The wall consists of limestone blocks clad in marble. The marbles come from Thasos, an island of North Aegean. It's the same type of marble used for the sculpture of Lion of Amphipolis.
