2 killed in head-on crash near Millerton Lake identified

We're learning more tonight about two people killed in a head on crash near Millerton Lake on Labor Day.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) --

The Fresno County Coroner has identified the victims as 23-year-old Desiree Rodriguez and 54-year-old Manuel Avila Salazar.

Investigators say Rodriguez was driving a 2006 Chrysler Sebring when she collided with a construction truck early Monday morning along Millerton Road and Winchell Cove Road.

Salazar was behind the wheel of the Ford F-350 truck. His passenger was hospitalized and is expected to survive. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

BOSTON -- Federal investigators say the crew of a jet that crashed in Massachusetts last year, killing Philadelphia Inquirer co-owner Lewis Katz and six others, did not perform a pre-flight check and failed to disengage a safety mechanism before takeoff.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced the results Wednesday of the investigation into the May 2014 crash in Bedford, Mass.

The Gulfstream G-IV business jet overran the runway, crashed into a ravine and caught fire.

The NTSB said the crew engaged a device that prevents control surfaces from moving when the jet is parked, but did not disengage it before takeoff.

The system was meant to prevent the throttle from being moved more than 6 degrees, but the throttle was moved almost four times that amount.

Katz was a philanthropist and businessman who once co-owned the New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - 

A state regulator says cleanup of a massive 2013 oil spill in northwestern North Dakota is being slowed due to the lack of natural gas needed to power equipment at the site.

State environmental scientist Bill Suess says workers will be at the site near Tioga at least another two years baking oil from the soil using a process called thermal desorption.

Suess says workers are trying to bring a second thermal desorption machine online but there is not enough natural gas available commercially in the area to power the unit. Suess called it “an irony” due to the amount of natural gas in the region that is being flared.

The spill was discovered by a Tioga farmer in September 2013 and has been called the worst in state history.

The crew of the "Cap Finistère" saved the three crew members of the 12-m-pleasure boat "Sourire" which had got in distress west of the Pointe de Grave (Gironde) were rescued in the night of Sep 7, 2015. 

The sailboat was adrift and partially sank on Sep 8. 

The "Sourire" was built in 1965 and was registered in Madagascar. 

It was about 200 km west of the Pointe de Grave (Gironde) when issuing a Mayday on Sep 7 at 10 p.m. 

The ferry headed towards the position, and at 11:57 p.m., the three persons on board were recovered unharmed by a rescue boat of the Brittany Ferries vessel. 

They were taken to Bilbao the following morning at 7 a.m. The maritime prefecture of the Atlantic issued a warning regarding the drifting boat. 

In the morning, a helicopter took off in La Rochelle to locate the boat. At noon a maritime patrol aircraft Atlantique 2 of the Naval aviation base Lann-Bihoue, diverted to carry out another search. 

Both searches are unsuccessful.

"Nele Maersk" Containership caused oil spill off Barcelona

The crew of the "Nele Maersk" on Sep 8, 2015, reported an accidental oil spill about 70 miles off Barcelona in the Mediterranean Sea. 

The accident happened enroute from Algericas to Genova during a routine transfer of the fuel from one tank to another. 

The Spanish authorities launched a cleaning operation, engaging a helicopter, a surveillance aircraft and anti-pollution vessels. 

The quantity of the fuel spilled was yet unknown.
