BENSALEM, PA — A fire started in a Bensalem home Saturday while the family was watching television.

No one was injured, said Bensalem Battalion Chief Rob Sponheimer, but the home was left uninhabitable.

Firefighters rescued three cats believed to be trapped inside the home.

The fire was reported shortly after 2 p.m. on the 2800 block of Berwyn Road off Stratford Road in the Nottingham section of the township.

Nottingham Fire Co. Chief Ron Harris said firefighters arrived to find smoke pouring from the eaves of the home and the gable ends at the roof line.

The family smelled and saw smoke and got out. Firefighters from the Nottingham, Trevose and Penndel companies at the blaze under control at 2:19 p.m.

Sponheimer said the fire originated in a closet in an addition on the rear of the home. But how it started remains under investigation.

The rear of the home and attic sustained significant damage, and the remainder of the house has heavy smoke damage.

The family of four was getting assistance from the Red Cross for a temporary place to stay.

A boom lift overturned earlier today in Roosendaal, the Netherlands when the ground - gave way under one of its wheels.

The machine was only partially extended

Roosendaal

One of the wheels pushed through the block paving - or possibly ran off the edge - causing the overturn

The incident with a new 86ft Manitou 280TJ telescopic boom lift owned by rental company and Manitou distributor Collé, occurred at a new building at Kellebeek College, where it was being used to install awnings. Due to the snow it is hard to be certain if the block paving gave way, or the operator allowed the machine to stray off the edge of the path.

The operator was still conscious when the emergency services arrived and was treated for a head injury, he also complained of neck and leg pains. He was rushed to hospital where we understand that his condition is not thought to be critical.

The operator was lucky to have escaped with his life

This is not the first time that a boom lift would have pushed through block paving - a popular ground covering in the Netherlands. The problem is that due to the low flat nature of the country, much of the ground is soft and sandy, commercial buildings are therefore almost invariably constructed on deep piles, but away from, or between the piles the ground can be less than supportive for concentrated loadings.

With wheel loadings on a boom of this size easily exceeding four tonnes – concentrated by the unyielding poly filled tires – it can prove to be too much for the interlocking blocks to support, as this example demonstrates.

In the case the user was lucky to have escaped with his life.

THE CHIEF OF THE MEDORA FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS KILLED BY OWN FIRE TRUCK AS IT WAS BACKING UP AT A RESCUE SITE

February 7, 2015

MACOUPIN COUNTY, ILLINOIS --

The chief of the Medora Fire Department was killed Thursday afternoon after being run over by a fire truck driven by his own fire department.

Illinois State Police say the fire department was attempting to close a road for a helicopter to land in a medical emergency.

The incident happened at about 2:30 p.m. in the rural Chesterfield, Ill., area.

The Medora firefighters were responding to a call for a man who had broken his leg when a tree limb fell on him, said Earl Nixon, president of the fire district.

Chief Kenneth Lehr, 59, was hit by the fire truck as it was backing up. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lehr has been the chief in Medora since 2006 and just last month retired from his day job.

Grief counselors are being provided to other firefighters. Neighboring fire districts are helping by taking all emergency calls for Medora.

Unfortunately, quite a few EMS and fire and police are killed by backing up of trucks or other vehicles at these sites.  The lighting is either not existent or not good at all, there is a lack of coordination with all the EMS and fire personnel, etc.  Therefore, backing up accidents happen all the time.  The chief was killed in the line of duty and he will be missed.

ONE PERSON DEAD AS BOILING WATER FROM BURST HEATING PIPES FILLS THE STREETS IN LUND, SWEDEN

ONE PERSON DEAD AS BOILING WATER FROM BURST HEATING PIPES FILLS THE STREETS IN LUND, SWEDEN

LUND, SWEDEN

One person is dead after a burst heating pipe caused near boiling water to flood streets in Lund, Sweden on Friday. The death is being blamed on a bus accident that occurred as a result of the flooding, although police have yet to confirm.

"Units have reported almost zero visibility," Nils Norling of the SkĂĄne police said.
Police responded to reports of the bus accident around 7:15 p.m. local time, an hour after emergency services determined the source of the leak to be a fractured district heating pipe in the city centre. While what caused the bus accident is still uncertain, a witness reported seeing the bus lurching down the street, out of control, with a mangled bicycle in its wheels.

"When you see a bus approaching careering in that manner and hear people screaming and see somebody lying in one place and someone lying in another, then it all becomes rather overwhelming," Norling added.

Local residents used wooden pallets to walk in the water after the break, in an effort to avoid burns.

In addition to the one dead, seven other people were reported to have injuries linked to the water break.

Lund is a town in the southern province of Scania, and houses Lund University, established in 1666, and stands as one of Scandanavia's largest institutions for education.
