Speeding New Jersey State trooper seriously injured after he ran off the road and struck a tree on I-78 WB in Warren, NJ

WARREN, New Jersey (WABC) -- A speeding New Jersey State Police trooper was involved in a serious crash that trapped him in his cruiser Monday afternoon.

The crash happened on I-78 eastbound in Warren just west of Exit 40.

The NJSP said the speeding trooper's vehicle was heading east when it ran off the road and struck a tree.

Emergency crews had to cut the trooper out of the vehicle. He was then transported by helicopter to the hospital.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-78 have been shut down for the investigation.

The speeding trooper's condition is not known.

HAMILTON TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- It's been a long night for drivers heading eastbound on the Atlantic City Expressway.

Their trips were rerouted and they had to find their way around a gasoline tanker that flipped over on the eastbound lanes around 1 p.m. Sunday.

It happened near the Hamilton Township exit.

Officials say the spill is serious.

Hazmat crews had to called in.

That's left neighbors around here to wonder if they should be worried.

According to the New Jersey State Police, 7,000 gallons of gasoline spilled out of the tanker before the leak was stopped.

Troopers say for an unknown reason, the driver of the tanker lost control and turned over.  This buffoon of a driver was going too fast and failed to accommodate the curve.
And since then the expressway eastbound has been closed.

And that meant a lot of drivers who weren't familiar with the area had to ask for help.

At the time of this report, crews said they were set to partially open eastbound lanes to traffic.

All lanes are expected to reopen overnight.

Crews say it will take two more days of work to completely clean up the gas spill.

NORTH BERGEN, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police are at the scene of a hit and run that injured two pedestrians in North Bergen, New Jersey.

A car plowed into two people on Paterson Plank Road and 10th Street, and the driver kept on driving.

Witnesses say the vehicle came speeding off of Kennedy Boulevard, and seemed to have cut through the parking lot, barreling through the two pedestrians before taking off.

The pedestrians were tossed into the air on impact. Immediately after the collision, people then came rushing over to help the victims.

The victims were rushed to the hospital, but their conditions are currently unknown.

Police are working to find out the make and model of the vehicle they are looking for.

Victims in North Bergen hit and run have died; Driver in custody

NORTH BERGEN, New Jersey (WABC) -- Two pedestrians were killed when they were struck by a hit-and-run driver at a dangerous intersection in New Jersey Sunday night.

The victims were pronounced dead shortly after the crash, which happened around 8 p.m. at Kennedy Boulevard and Paterson Plank Road in North Bergen.

Surveillance video showed the two victims walking side by side just before they were hit.



Witnesses say the vehicle came speeding off of Kennedy Boulevard, visibly losing control and then darting across a parking lot before hitting the pedestrians.

"He took the turn too fast, lost control, it looks like," one witness said. "Then he gained control after he hit them and took off. He swerved into my lane, and I swerved to avoid him, and I pulled over and noticed that people were hit."

The victims have been identified as 57-year-old Russell Maffei and 80-year-old Marie Tauro.

Maffei was the chair of the Jersey City Republican Party.

"Today, he's supposed to be filing his petition to run for reelection," Hudson County Republican chair Jose Arango said. "Now, we are preparing his wake. It's a sad day."

Tauro was commissioner of the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority, serving under Mayor Steven Fulop.

"She would swim every day, two miles at the NJCU pool, plus she was in great shape," he said. "She was a fitness fanatic, and her energy level was through the roof. So you're telling me she's 80, and I'm actually surprised she's 80."

Maffei was an early supporter of President Donald Trump and was a member of Governor Chris Christie's transition team. Christie released the following statement:

"Mary Pat and I were deeply saddened and disturbed to learn of the tragic deaths of Russell Maffei and Marie Tauro in what police are reporting to be a hit-and-run incident in North Bergen last night. More than just a long-time Republican colleague, Russ was a dear friend who I had known for many years and who I could always rely upon. As the full details of this tragedy continue to unfold, Mary Pat and I want the families and friends of both Russ and Marie to know that we will do all we can to make sure that justice is done. The victims and their loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers."

The driver, 38-year-old Michael Hansen, was taken into custody after police tracked down his car just before 4 a.m.

Hansen, a Hudson County corrections officer, is charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death and resisting arrest.

ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A pest-control worker who died in a job-site accident in a residential North County neighborhood was identified Saturday by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office as a 66-year-old Guatay man.

Jack Rafael Ruiz was found by a co-worker lying unconscious on the ground with a bleeding head wound outside a home in the 1400 block of Oak Hill Drive in Escondido on Thursday afternoon.

Medics tried in vain to revive Ruiz before pronouncing him dead at the scene.

The co-worker said the accident happened while he was away from the job site for about two hours before he returned at about 2 p.m.

That's when he found Ruiz unresponsive, lying on the back patio. The co-worker said it appeared that Ruiz had fallen about 10 feet to the ground.

The victim's partner found the man who is in his 60s lying unconscious on the ground outside a home in the 1400 block of Oak Hill Drive in Escondido shortly after 1:30 p.m., according to police.

Medics tried in vain to revive him before pronouncing him dead at the scene. The man's name was withheld pending family notification.

The co-worker, who did not witness the accident, said the victim appeared to have fallen about 10 feet off of a patio, Sgt. Fred Cheatham said.

ROXBOROUGH (WPVI) -- A woman has died after a crash in Philadelphia's Roxborough section.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. Sunday on Hagy's Mill Road near Belfrey Drive.

Police say the driver of a car struck a deer and slammed into a PECO utility pole.

The pole then fell onto the car, splitting it in half, police say.

The 22-year-old female passenger was ejected from the vehicle.

She was rushed to Einstein Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

The 27-year-old male driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

UPPER ROXBOROUGH (WTXF) - A woman was killed when the car she was in hit a deer in Upper Roxborough, overnight.

Philadelphia police say it happened shortly after 12:30am Sunday along Hagys Mill and Campanile roads.

The 27-year-old man driving hit the deer and lost control of the car.

Then, the car slammed into a PECO electric pole, causing it to fall and split the vehicle in half.

Investigators say the 22-year-old victim was ejected from the top of the car, since it split, and she landed on her head. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.

The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
